John Lennon's White Suit Sells at Auction

 

The iconic white suit music legend John Lennon wore on the cover of the infamous Beatles album, Abbey Road, was sold on Saturday during the annual New Year's Day auction at the Braswell Gallery in Connecticut.  

The winning bidder - at $46,000 - requested to remain anonymous.

The suit, which was made in Paris in 1969, was expected to bring in at least $115,000.

The famed album cover, which was shot by photographer Ian MacMillan on August 8, 1969, is one of the most memorable album covers in history, largely due to the fact that it was last album The Beatles recorded.  The album was released in 1969 in both the UK and the United States.

The album cover is named after Abbey Road, a thoroughfare located in the borough of Camden and the city of Westminster in London, where the famed cover shot was taken.

Frank Zappa Statue to be Unveiled in Baltimore

 

Officials in Baltimore said they have set a September date for unveiling a 15-foot bust of the late musician and composer Frank Zappa. 

The statue -- which was donated to the city in 2008 by a Zappa fan club in Lithuania -- will be dedicated Sept. 18, The Baltimore Sun reported Saturday. The statue will be placed outside the Southeast Anchor Library in Baltimore's Highlandtown neighborhood.

Roswell Encina, a spokeswoman for the city's Enoch Pratt Free Library system, told the newspaper the library is getting a lot of attention following the announcement it will be the home of the Zappa bust. The library laid in an extra supply of books, CDs and DVDs on Zappa, branch manager Cindy Kleback said.

"People are checking them out already," he said. "If you want to learn more about Zappa, travel to the Southeast Anchor Library."

Zappa was born in Baltimore in 1940. He died of cancer at age 52 in 1993.

His mother, Rose Marie, was a librarian. His widow, Gail, had urged Baltimore officials to place the bust near a city library, the Sun said.

Zappa was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

The actress posed for jeweller Alexis Bittar, who has unveiled a costume jewellery line appropriately called Superbitch, said to have been inspired by the Alexis Carrington character.

Miss Collins, whose husband is a mere 44, has insisted she would never resort to cosmetic surgery to preserve her looks. On Wednesday she wasn't saying whether she had the same views on a little airbrushing.

In the past she has said: "In front of the camera my skin probably isn't nearly as good as it used to be. But, what the hell, everybody's got to get older.'
